Hang Lung Mathematics Awards comprises eight awards: Gold, Silver, Bronze Awards and up to five Honorable Mentions.
The assessment consists of two stages: report review and oral defense. The adjudication board of international mathematicians with diverse expertise will assess the academic quality of the research reports and select potential teams for the oral defense session, where shortlisted teams will be given an opportunity to present their work and respond to questions raised by the Scientific Committee.
Each award has four components: a Student Education Award, a Teacher Leadership Award, a School Development Grant, and a Tuition Scholarship for Master of Science (M.Sc.) Program in Mathematics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Scientific Committee, at her discretion, may also award designated teams with Special Commendation certificate in recognition of their research work. In addition, a certificate will be issued to each of students and teachers who participate in the competition, if their submitted research reports achieve a reasonable academic standard.
The Four Components of the Awards
- The winning students will each receive a crystal trophy, a certificate, and a Student Education Award. The Student Education Award is equally shared by all team members; the funds are disbursed to each student upon entering university in installments until all funds are used.
- The winning teachers will each receive a crystal trophy, a certificate, and a Teacher Leadership Award. The Teacher Leadership Award is given in lump sum.
- The winning schools will each receive a crystal trophy and a School Development Grant. The School Development Grant supports the development of mathematics education at the team's school. Awarded schools will be invited to submit summaries of their activities and experiences on using the grant.
- Each school may also nominate a teacher to receive a Tuition Scholarship for M.Sc. Program in Mathematics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The teacher will be reimbursed upon enrollment and achievement of a satisfactory academic performance.
At each round of the mathematics research competition, Hang Lung Properties donates a grant of HK$1,000,000 and another HK$1,000,000 to support administrative and educational costs. In addition, Department of Mathematics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong sponsors more than HK$300,000 for the Tuition Scholarships .
